Photography audition requirements
Students must bring their portfolios to the audition. Students do not need to bring in a camera for the audition.
The audition process takes approximately 20 minutes and consists of two parts:
1. Portfolio Review
- All photos must be presented professionally in a portfolio binder with protective sleeves. Photographs must be printed no smaller than 8X10 inches and be presented with no more than one image per page.
- Photos should be labeled with appropriate requirement.
- The requirements for the portfolio vary between grade levels. Requirements are listed below and should be carefully adhered to.
2. Interview
- Please note that our Photography faculty will ask questions related to the portfolio to learn more about the applicant's motivation and purpose.
MIDDLE SCHOOL PORTFOLIO (6th-8th Grades):
Bring in a portfolio of your best photography. Your portfolio should include 13 photos. Included in those 13 photographs should be:
- 1 Photo that tells an existing story. You can choose any type of narrative including short stories, fiction, non-fiction, song lyrics, fairy tales and more. You are not required to include any writing or text in your images.
- 3 Creative Self Portraits (Photograph should depict the artist creating an image of themself)
- 4 Photos that interpret the following words: “Joy”, “Isolation”, “Freedom”, “Serene”
- 5 of your Choice (Any subject matter or technique that includes photography)
*Student may choose to supplement the requirements with additional art of any media showing their creativity along with comprehension of elements and composition.
HIGH SCHOOL PORTFOLIO (9th– 12th Grades):
Bring in a portfolio of your best photography. Your portfolio should include 16 photos. Included in those 16 photographs should be:
- 1 Photo that creatively tells an existing story. You can choose any type of narrative including short stories, fiction, non-fiction, song lyrics, fairy tales and more. You are not required to include any writing or text in your images.
- 5 Photos utilizing the following technical skills, with no restriction on subject matter
o Low light
o Dramatic lighting
o Shallow depth of field
o Black and white photograph
o Slow Shutter Speed
- 3 Self Portraits (Photograph should depict the artist creating an image of themself)
- 7 of your choice. Any subject matter and technique that includes photography.
*Student may choose to supplement the requirements with additional art of any media showing their creativity along with comprehension of elements and composition.
