Instrumental Music

We invite students of all skill levels, including beginners, to showcase their musical talents. The instrumental music audition consists of four activities as follows:

1. Perform a Prepared Piece

  • Beginners (Middle and High School): You may choose to audition on recorder, piano, guitar, or a percussion instrument. If you have recently begun to take lessons on an instrument other than the ones listed above, you may perform your beginner level audition on that instrument. Performing a simple piece reflecting your current level will be acceptable. PLEASE NOTE: Openings for high school level beginners are limited due to experience levels required to perform in available high school ensembles.
  • Experienced Players (Middle and High School): Prepare two pieces of contrasting styles that demonstrate your skills on your instrument (1-2 minutes).

PLEASE NOTE: Students auditioning for concert percussion instrument consideration should prepare solos on either snare drum, a mallet percussion instrument or timpani (or any combination of two). Selections made from the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) percussion solo list are preferred, but any solo illustrating the student's performance level will be accepted.

2. Demonstrate Your Technical Playing Level:

  • Beginners: You will be asked to demonstrate basic skills, such as simple scales, rhythms or vocal patterns with the auditioning teacher leading.
  • Experienced Players: Be ready to perform several major scales and the chromatic scale, according to your ability and experience level.

3. Music Sight-Reading:

  • Beginners and Experienced Players: All applicants will be asked to sight-read written music according to their experience level.

4. Interview:

  • All applicants will participate in a brief discussion about their musical interests, goals, and any previous experience.
