Vocal music audition requirements

Students auditioning into the Miami Arts Charter School Vocal Department must meet the following requirements in order to be considered for entry.

AUDITION AND INTERVIEW CRITERIA:

1.   Perform a portion of a song from memory without accompaniment (a cappella).

  • The selection may be a folk song, classical piece, patriotic song, musical theater, or a simple hymn. Please refrain from performing contemporary/pop songs.

2.   Vocalize at the direction of the instructor to determine range, voice part, and vocal quality.

3.   Sing a major scale ascending/descending.

  • This can be done on solfege (do, re, mi), numbers, or a neutral syllable such as "dah."

4.   If the student has prior knowledge of music theory, this will be assessed on an individual basis and taken into account for ensemble placement but is not necessarily required for admittance.

HIGH SCHOOL APPLICANTS ONLY:

1.   If interested in auditioning for the vocal jazz ensembles, please prepare a jazz standard from memory without accompaniment in addition to the first selection from the criteria above.

  • This can be from any of the Jamey Aebersold books or any appropriate standards book. Improvisation is optional. If not improvising, students should sing one chorus of the main melody and stop.
